FRICTION INSIDE THE EARTH IS A SOURCE OF HEAT
Free access.
Breef content: |
An Irkutsk geologist has suggested that our planet's heat source is friction in the outer core. The outer core is a huge liquid area, divided into many layers, which move with different speeds in different directions, thus causing friction between them and heat. Sometimes heat explosions happen, making lava masses break through the mantle and crust. The study is funded by Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the "Leading Scientific Schools" programme.

LINDEN WARNS
Breef content: |
In ecologically unfavourable conditions, linden leaves acquire a distinctly asymmetrical shape. It is possible to estimate the state of environment judging from the degree of asymmetry of linden leaves. The scientists from the Nizhnii Novgorod State Pedagogical University conclude that linden can be used as a biological indicator.

EXTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD CAUSES THE PUZZLING HEATING OF THE SOLAR CORONA
Free access.
Breef content: |
Scientists have long been puzzled by the fact that the Sun's atmosphere called corona is much hotter than its visible surface and proposed different explanations for this fact. Russian researchers from the Elista-based Kalmykia State University make doubts on the hypothesis of their American colleagues from the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center that the plasma of the solar corona is rather viscous which causes corona's high temperature.

Breef content: |
How many transponders are required to ensure vehicular communication in Moscow and the Moscow Region? The Moscow scientists have asserted that no more than three transponders are needed. The point is that these transponders should be installed on the gliders, which will hover above the earth at the height of more than 10 kilometres.

COLD IS THE DRIVING FORCE OF EVOLUTION
Breef content: |
According to the hypothesis of Professor Nikolai L. Dobretsov, the major driving force of live organisms' evolution is the change of climate on the Earth, the evolution going at a quicker pace during the cold periods. Dobretsov's hypothesis is in line with the main concept of the scientific workshop "Formation and evolution of the geospheric-biospheric system", the whole purpose of which being to establish closer ties between geologists and biologists studying different aspects of the same subject - history of the Earth.

RNA IS A MAIN MOLECULE OF LIFE
Breef content: |
According to Professor Alexander S. Spirin, RNA is more important for life than DNA. A molecule of RNA is multifunctional and all-sufficient. The life on the Earth might originate from evolution of self-reproducing RNA molecules.

ARCTIC IS GETTING COLDER
Breef content: |
For the last 10 thousand years Arctic climate has become colder. Scientists from Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, St. Petersburg came to this conclusion based on a special paleoclimatic reconstruction. Changes in summer temperatures in ancient times make them doubt that the present-day global warming is caused by human activity.

Moscow aircraft designers at the Faculty Aviation Engineering, Moscow State Aviation Institute (http://www.mai.ru/english/), have worked out a project of an aircraft, which takes about eight hundred people at one time straight to America or Australia without intermediate landings. Due to certain principally new innovations, such aircrafts will easily fit in with the existing infrastructure of airports. In other words, air-carriers of the twenty-first century will not need extra conditions. A-class airports will be able to accept them.

Breef content: |
For years the scientists from the Institute of Forestry, Russian Academy of Sciences, have been carrying out the research in the experimental Tellerman oak-wood located in the Gribanovka District, Voronezh Region. The scientists have been observing the life cycle of individual trees and the entire oak-wood in attempt to investigate the reasons for the oak underwood dying out and to determine the best conditions for the oak survival in natural environment. The project has been funded with the assistance of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

WHY HAVE NOT OCEANS EVAPORATED YET?

Breef content: |
The Sun gives the Earth great amount of heat. It seems that because of the greenhouse effect the Earth surface temperature should significantly rise - but this does not happen. So why the Earth climate is stable and the oceans have not yet evaporated? As Russian scientists believe, the answer is in living organisms.

Modern people have a lot of reasons to be annoyed. The noise of a car engine in a traffic jam is just one of the factors that can cause stress. People usually express their feelings with words. However, different people use different expressions. Russian scientists have developed a new method that enables them to reduce all word combinations to a common denominator and compare the noises that prefer specialists and dilettantes, men and women, the young and the old.

An excess of glucose in blood is a bad sign - it is a well-known fact. However, a high concentration of glucose makes it possible for cells to withstand frost. A discovery of a method for storing cells at low temperatures would contribute to the solution of many biological and medical problems. That is why scientists thoroughly observe all animals adapted to cooling and freezing.
