The Baikal basin is extending, although a huge amount of alluvion keeps getting into the unique lake and filling up the hollow. According to calculations of a Siberian scientist, the supply of the pure Baikal water has increased by 3 billion cubic meters since the middle of the 19th century. The study has been funded by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
