Name THE TIEN SHAN IS LOSING ICECAPS
Breef content: Kazakh glaciologists fear that the ice in the Northern Tien Shan will thaw off completely by the end of the current century. In the scientists' opinion, this can turn out to be a real catastrophe for arid Central Asia. The study had been accomplished in the framework of the INTAS project (International Association for promoting cooperation with scientists of the former Soviet Union).

Name FEMALE DISCRIMINATION IN SCIENCE

The study results have turned out distressing. Despite women's extensive scientific activity, their role is often underestimated, thus complicating their promotion to the executive positions. Name FROST SAVES ORCHID
Breef content: Orchids, charming tropical flowers, are very popular as gifts. But very few people know that more than 25 000 varieties of orchids are in danger of extinction and included into the International Convention of Wild Flora and Fauna. Russian scientists concerned about this problem have developed a new method for conservation of exotic seeds. This work was supported by the Russian State Research and Technical Programs: the "Biological Diversity", "Biodiversity Conservation", and the "Support of Unique Pilot Installations in Russia".

Name PESTS BEAT THE EFFORTS OF PLANT-BREEDERS
Breef content: Pests that damage crops are rather smart. They quickly realize that the plant varieties cultivated by plant-breeders are more nourishing than wild ones. Although such plants may look strange and unattractive for pests, nevertheless pests consume them even more intensively. Russian scientists have come to the conclusion that pests consume most willingly the recent varieties of cultivated plants.
