The initial stage of the research has proved that leather boots became fashionable in Russia in the 14th century, they were worn by young and old alike. A WATER VOLE FINDS ITS MATE BY SMELL

The results of the research have proved that the males of the water vole (Arvicola terrestris) choose the females by smell. Using the sense of smell a male gets almost complete information about the future sexual partner: starting from the extent the female is ready for reproduction, up to the number of youngs the female can potentially deliver, including the number of males in the future posterity. The research has been accomplished with financial support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (#97-04-49-383 and #99-04 50013).
