KOLA PENINSULA IS A NATURAL GENE BANK FOR THE ATLANTIC SALMON
Breef content: |
The scientists of Russia and Great Britain have determined that the rivers of Kola Peninsula make, in a way, a natural gene bank. Practically the entire gene pool of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is preserved and is being reproduced in the Kola Peninsula area, while in other areas the number of gene variations of the Atlantic salmon population is limited. The reason is as follows: after the retreat of the last glacier, Kola Peninsula got populated within a short period by the fish species which had survived the glaciation in different areas - in the rivers of Canada, of British Isles and in the basin of the Baltic Sea.
