Every year, an epidemic of acute viral respiratory diseases including influenza, hits the country. Specialists from the Federal State Institution of Science - Moscow Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after G.N. Gabrichevsky (Federal Service on Surveillance for Consumer Right Protection and Human Well-Being (Rospotrebnadzor)), the D.I. Ivanovsky Scientific Research Institute of Virology (Russian Academy of Medical Sciences) and Isolation Clinical Hospital # 1 suggest that during this period a well-known diphtheria vaccine – Codivak – should be applied as a prophylactic drug and thårapeutic agent, the vaccine was developed under the guidance of Professor Elena Shmeleva Doctor of Biology, Head of Sector of Microbe Immunomodulators.
Codivak represent dried polysaccharides, lipids and proteins of cellular wall of nontoxigenic corynebacteria. Corynebacteria are an integral part of normal microflora of skin, respiratory tract and oral cavity. The vaccine was created to cure people infected with diphtheria pathogenes. However, besides that, Codivak is a gentle immunocorrective remedy, it strengthens nonspecific immunity of the organism and normalizes the mucous tunic microflora of the mouth and nasopharynx. Physicians decided to use these properties in their struggle against acute viral respiratory diseases.
Acute viral respiratory diseases remain one of the most urgent medical, and social and economic problems. These illnesses are rather grave and troublesome per se, but they also weaken immunity, cause exacerbation of chronic diseases and pose complications. Unfortunately, there are no sufficiently effective chemical remedies yet to cure acute viral respiratory diseases, vaccination cannot reliably protect from this misfortune either. People have to hope for natural preparations, which stimulate host defenses. Codivak is among such preparations.
The preparation was tested at the children’s department of viral respiratory infections of Isolation Clinical Hospital # 1. The investigation involved 60 children at the age of 15 moths through 14 years. The children were divided into two groups. All of them received basic therapy (oxygen- medication inhalations), but the group under trial was subscribed the Codivak inhalations on top of that (for 3 to 5 days, 2 times a day). Codivak was used in the aerosol form as respiratory infection pathogens get into the organism through upper air passages.
Catarrhal phenomena, rhinitis and cough disappeared quicker with the patients who had been given Codivak, and the temperature dropped sooner. These patients recovered sooner and more often avoided complications (pneumonia, acute and chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory apparatus diseases). Besides, virus infection carrier state stopped quicker with the patients in the trial group. The majority of children had been infected with quite a number of viruses, however, Codivak turned out effective in all cases. No side reactions – either toxic or allergic ones – were found with any patients who had received the preparation. Codivak harmlessness was also confirmed by blood tests taken prior to and after the treatment. They also confirmed the immune system normalization.
Physicians made sure that Codivak application improves clinical presentation of the disease as compared to the traditional course of treatment. None of the children who had received the drug fell repeatedly ill. According to the researchers’ opinion, Codivak may be efficiently used for treatment and prophylaxis of the entire acute viral respiratory diseases complex, including influenza.
