Some time ago Russian criminalists tried to revise the results of the radiocarbon dating for the Turin Shroud, which was made by three laboratories in the USA, Great Britain and Switzerland. But their calculations were incorrect.

The Shroud of Turin is a famous catholic church relic. Christians consider it as a sacred thing. Authenticity of the Shroud was always in doubt. First it was mentioned in historical sources only in the middle of 14th century and this dating was confirmed by radiocarbon dating. In 1998 three laboratories at Oxford (UK), Arizona (USA) and Zurich (Switzerland) made the analysis and concluded that the relic had been made between 1262 and 1384.

The dating was called in question more than once. For example, Anatoliy V. Fesenko and Alexander V. Belyakov Institute of the Criminal Law, Federal Security Service in Moscow suggested that radiocarbon dating gave wrong results because the Shroud was contaminated with fresh vegetable oil during the restoration in 1532.

However, Dmitry A. Voronov from the Institute for Problems of Information Transfer and Vladimir G. Surdin from the Shternberg State Astronomy Institute have made new calculations and showed that the contamination could change the age of the shroud less than by 40 years. The source of the error is that the criminalists did not account for the ratio between carbon isotopes 14C and 12C in fresh vegetable oil.
